AAOS 2017 public service campaign declares war on 2 public health issues — 4 key takeaways

Orthopedic

The AAOS declared war on opioid misuse and childhood obesity at its Annual Meeting in San Diego with a new public service campaign.

Here are four things to know:

1. The prescription safety campaign strives to better educate and advise patients to effectively manage their pain and properly use opioid pain medications.

2. Millions of American are dependent or addicted to codeine, morphine, oxymorphone, tramadol, hydrocodone, oxycodone and other types of painkillers. Patients taking opioids prior to surgery experience greater post-surgical pain and face higher risks of pneumonia, over-sedation and death.

3. The active families campaign promotes a nutritious diet and exercise and activity during childhood.

4. While video games, technology, screen time and busy schedules keep kids and adolescents from exercising on a regular basis, AAOS hopes its new initiatives inspires better lifestyle choices.
