Dr. Jorge Galante dies: 4 notes

Orthopedic surgeon pioneer Jorge Galante, MD, passed away earlier this month after a long and illustrious career as a physician, according to The Chicago Tribune.  

Here are four things to know:

 

1. Dr. Galante was appointed the first chairman of the orthopedic surgery department at what is now Rush University Medical Center in Chicago in 1972.

 

2. He played a vital role in revolutionizing the joint replacement field by creating a porous metal fiber coating for prosthetic devices that allowed natural bone growth to fix the patient's bone.

 

3. Dr. Galante was one of the first surgeons in the Chicago area to perform total hip replacements.

 

4. Dr. Galante was considered a leading physician-scientist up until his death on Feb. 9 from cancer complications.
