Dr. Nelson Saldua's long journey to orthopedics: 5 things to know

Nelson Saldua, MD, knew when he was 20-years-old that he wanted to be a physician, but he didn't know everything in store for him as he worked to get there, The Columbian reports.

Here's what you should know.


1. Dr. Saldua attended medical school before spending 14 years in the Navy with two deployments. After serving his country, he came back and moved from California to the Northwest to begin practicing as an orthopedic spine surgeon.


2. Dr. Saldua first entered the medical field as a pediatrician but quickly realized it wasn't for him.


3. Dr. Saluda attended the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD, to capitalize on its tuition-free schooling.


4. After graduating he began a seven-year commitment to the Navy. He completed a residency and a fellowship and began working as the head of the orthopedic department at the NATO Multinational Medical Unit in Afghanistan.


5. Dr. Saldua accepted a position at The Vancouver Clinic in Felida, Wash.
