Dr. Samer Attar shares update on dire healthcare situation in Syria: 5 notes

Orthopedic surgeon Samer Attar, MD, shared a story about his volunteer work in Syria with NPR.

Here's what you need to know.


1. Dr. Attar is an orthopedic surgeon with Chicago's Northwestern Medicine. He spent several months in Aleppo, Syria during the summer of 2016. He remains in contact with Syrians and continues to receive updates on the situation there.


2. Dr. Attar said after recent bombings in the city several of the medical personnel he worked with our injured and dying. He added the hospitals in the area are often targeted in the violence.


3. Hospitals in Aleppo were more akin to field hospitals than traditional brick and mortar buildings in the United States.


4. Dr. Attar said patient's fear going to the hospitals because "they know the hospitals will be targeted."


5. He said despite the attacks and running out of medical supplies, the physicians working in Syria are creative and resilient.
