Drs. Susan Jordan, Sharrona Williams encourage young women to pursue orthopedics: 6 takeaways

Orthopedic

OrthoAtlanta's Susan Jordan, MD, and Sharrona Williams, MD, were among the several other professionals that participated in The Perry Initiative, which encourages women in high school and college to pursue careers in engineering and orthopedics.

Here's what you need to know.

1. The Perry Initiative brought its training program to Atlanta on Nov. 18 and Nov. 19, 2016.

2. Nearly 30 students attended the program to learn more about careers in orthopedics.

3. The program began in 2009 and was named after Jacquelin Perry, MD. Dr. Perry was one of the first female orthopedists in the 1950s. She earned her board certification in 1958. She was one of only seven women in her graduating class of 76. She had a long career at Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center and served as the Chief of Pathokinesiology and Chief of Biomechanics.

4. Dr. Jordan taught the students the basics of suturing wound care. Dr. Williams taught students about urgent fracture care.

5. Both physicians thought it was a positive experience and hoped their lessons were encouraging.

"These early interactions with successful female orthopedic surgeons may provide the confidence they need to pursue a male-dominated career path," Dr. Williams said. "It is a privilege to participate in shaping these bright young minds."
