Orthopedic surgeon and Swarthmore mayor Dr. Charles D. Hummer Jr. dies: 5 thoughts

Longtime orthopedic surgeon and former mayor of Swarthmore County in Connecticut Charles D. Hummer Jr., MD, died Oct. 11, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Here's what you need to know.

 

1. Dr. Hummer earned his medical degree from Philadelphia's Hahnemann Medical College in 1964. The rest of his medical training was completed at York Hospital, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and the Alfred I duPont Institute.

 

2. He served in the air force reserve at Dow Air Force Base as a first lieutenant in 1966. He was honorably discharged as a captain in 1968.

 

3. Dr. Hummer practiced with Premier Orthopaedics for 44 years before he retired in 2012.

 

4. In addition to his professional life, Dr. Hummer served on the Swarthmore School Board, before he became mayor in the 1980s. He additionally was part of a group of residents who founded the private Swarthmore Academy.

 

5. Dr. Hummer was married to Deborah Anne Ward in 1961. She died of cancer in 1997. He is survived by son, Charles D. Hummer III, MD, and daughter, Mai T. Whitsett, as well as four grandchildren.
