IV vs. topical TXA for total hip replacements: 4 insights on outcomes

Orthopedic

Intravenous and topical tranexamic acid are both effective in reducing blood loss and transfusion costs for total hip arthroplasty, according to a study published in The Journal of Arthroplasty.

Researcher enrolled 139 patients in a randomized control trial. The patients received 2g of either topical or intravenous TXA.

Here are four insights:

1. Calculated blood and Hgb loss were lower in the IV group.

2. Both the IV and topical TXA patient groups effectively reduced the transfusion rate.

3. The use of TXA in THA resulted in savings of $314 per patient.

4. Study authors recommended the use of TXA via IV as it was easier to use.
