Orthopedic surgeon to know: Dr. Steve Powell of Stetson Powell Orthopedics and Sports Medicine

Steve Powell, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon and co-founder of Stetson Powell Orthopedic and Sports Medicine in Burbank, Calif. Dr. Powell also is active in the Arthroscopy Association of North America.

Dr. Powell is well-known for his music career as a member of the rock and roll band, Sha Na Na. He performed with the group at the Woodstock Festival and left the band in 1980 to pursue a career in medicine.

 

Dr. Powell presently is the team physician for the U.S. Soccer Federation Women's National Team. He previously worked with the team in the last two FIFA's Woman's World Cups in Shanghai and Germany. Additionally, he is a clinical professor at the Keck School of Medicine in Southern California and serves on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of United Cerebral Palsy.

 

Dr. Powell is presently the chief of the Africa Section and Director of Resident Education of Operation Arthroscopy, a non-profit providing arthroscopy services to those in need.

 

He earned his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He completed an orthopedic residency at the Hospital for Joint Disease in New York City and went on to complete a sports medicine fellowship at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles.
