Smith & Nephew launches long bone fracture plating system — 5 things to know

Orthopedic

Smith & Nephew launched the EVOS MINI Plating System for long bone complex fractures.

Here are five things to know about the new system:

1. The EVOS MINI Plating System is designed for long-bone trauma and includes mini, flat plates and screws designed to address fracture reduction and short-term fixation while the final, load-bearing repair is completed.

2. The system is organized in a single tray with three color-coded size modules for a variety of geometries.

3. Each module offers instrumentation to implement the corresponding variable-angle locking technology for locking screw placement up to 15 degrees off-axis.

4. The set is designed to optimize surgery flow. "Surgeons and nurses will appreciate that all the plate options are easy to see in a single tray and the color-coding helps quickly locate the corresponding instruments and screws in their modular caddy," said William Ricci, MD, chief of orthopedic trauma at Washington University in St. Louis.

5. The system has a stair-step design for the screw caddy to assure all screws are loaded at the appropriate size, which could reduce errors in central supply since measuring each screw becomes unnecessary.
