Physicians weigh in on EHR use; 26% use voice recognition feature

Medscape surveyed 1,150-plus physicians in 25-plus specialties about their practice management challenges in the report, "First Choice Healthcare Solutions appoints Michael Lamb director of ancillary services: 5 points."

Here is what they had to say about EHR use:

1. Aside from documenting visits, physicians used EHRs in the following ways:
• To identify patients who need follow-up visits — 50 percent
• To identify patients who need additional treatments — 42 percent
• To send reminders to patients — 38 percent
• None of the above — 30 percent

 

2. Do physicians use dictation or voice-recognition software for EHR patient records?
• Dictation — 7 percent
• Voice recognition — 26 percent
• Neither — 66 percent

 

3. Physicians identified the following EHR features as boosting efficiency:
• Electronic prescribing
• Ease of typing notes
• Easier to find results/reports
• Remote access
• Patient information dictation
• Templates
• Medical record sharing among physicians
• Quickly access past patient history
• Immunization tracker

 

4. Fifty-four percent of physicians said patients are not frustrated with their EHR use, while 36 percent said "occasionally" and 9 percent said "frequently."
