Senate fails to pass 3rd ACA repeal legislation this week: 7 things to know about 'skinny repeal' vote

In a narrow 49-to-51 vote, the Senate shot down the 'skinny repeal' amendment to the Republicans' ACA repeal and replace plan, according to CNN Politics.

Here are seven things to know:

 

1. The Senate rejected the proposal in the early morning of July 28.

 

2. Alongside 48 Democrats, Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, and Susan Collins, R-Maine, voted against the repeal.

 

3. Following the vote, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell commented: "This is clearly a disappointing moment. Our constituents have suffered through an awful lot under Obamacare. We thought they deserved better," according to CNN.

 

4. The 'skinny repeal' featured some changes to the legislation, including removing the individual mandate to purchase coverage.  

 

5. This passage failure represents the third time this week Senate Republicans have been unable to pass ACA repeal legislation, according to Medscape.
•    On July 25, the Senate rejected the Better Care Reconciliation Act in a 43-to-57 vote.
•    On July 26, the Senate defeated the Obamacare Repeal Reconciliation Act of 2017, in a 45-to-55 vote.

 

6. If the vote had taken a positive turn instead, the Senate Republicans' Health Care Freedom Act would have returned to the House for debate.

 

7. The Congressional Budget Office reported the HCFA would boost the number of uninsured Americans by 15 million in 2018.
