CBO: Latest ACA repeal proposal would leave 32M Americans uninsured

Practice Management

The Congressional Budget Office released its report on the impact of the Senate Republicans' latest ACA repeal proposal, the Obamacare Repeal Reconciliation Act of 2017

The Senate's original proposal, the Better Care Reconciliation Act, fell short of popularity, forcing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to again rethink the strategy.

Here are five things to know:

1. By 2026, the new legislation would leave 32 million Americans uninsured.

2. The CBO reported average premiums would see about a 25 percent increase in 2018.

3. The proposed legislation would do away with individual and employer mandates to offer insurance and eliminate federal subsidies to assist with coverage by 2020, Medscape reports. Additionally, the proposal would revoke Medicaid expansion under the ACA.

4. Compared to 90 percent under the current law, the CBO estimates 84 percent of Americans 65 years or younger would have coverage in 2018 under the proposed legislation.

5. By 2020, the CBO estimates about half of America's population would reside in areas with no payers in the nongroup market.
