Association of American Medical Colleges unsupportive of Senate healthcare bill: 5 takeaways

Practice Management

The Association of American Medical Colleges President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, MD, released a statement regarding the revised version of the Better Care Reconciliation Act.

Here are five takeaways:

1. The AAMC believes the revised bill still falls short in providing Americans with comprehensive, affordable health coverage and would leave millions without any coverage at all.

2. Medical schools and teaching hospitals recommend any replacement bill should maintain current coverage levels and not weaken Medicaid. Ideally, the process to forming a replacement bill would be transparent.

3. The revised bill does not address provisions that would cripple Medicaid and puts financial pressure on state budgets and healthcare providers.

4. Allowing insurers to sell plans without meaningful coverage will hurt those with preexisting conditions, destabilizing insurance markets.

5. Dr. Kirch said, "We urge members of the Senate to reject this bill and work together to craft legislations that will protect Americans' healthcare and will not result in millions more Americans uninsured."
