Former Keystone Orthopedic Specialists partner receives $2M in contract breach and fraud case: 5 key notes

Practice Management

Anesthesiologist and pain physician Nicholas Angelopoulos, MD, received around $2 million in a breach of contract and fraud case against his former partners, according to the Chicago Tribune

Here are five things to know:

1. Dr. Angelopoulos was a partner with Keystone Orthopedic Specialists in Hazel Crest, Ill., from 2004 to 2007. He alleged that prior to purchasing ownership in the practice, he was told his share of the annual expenses would be $250,000, but then ended up paying about four times as much, according to the report.

2. The overall expenses Dr. Angelopoulos paid were around 83 percent of his annual income; while partners received reports on their income and expenses, they didn't receive data on how the numbers were calculated.

3. Dr. Angelopoulos alleged breach of fiduciary duty against the practice and its president, and claimed the practice president filed a fraudulent 1099 tax form that resulted in an audit, according to the report.

4. The jury found in favor of Dr. Angelopoulos and awarded him around $2 million.

5. Keystone and its president were named as defendants; the defendants' lawyer disagreed with the verdict and contended the judge made errors. They may appeal the decision.
