AI transforming healthcare delivery: 6 considerations

Practice Management

Panelists discussed the impact of artificial intelligence on healthcare delivery at the 2017 Health Datapalooza conference in Washington, D.C., held from April 27 to April 28, according to AMA Wire.

Here are six considerations:

1. Panelists touched on various forms of AI, from computerized automation to neural network-based algorithms, during the panel, "At the Intersection of AI and Human Intelligence: The Future of Health Care Delivery."

2. Christopher Khoury, vice president of the AMA's environmental intelligence and strategic analytics unit, said the industry should focus on "selecting narrower tasks that computers can do better than humans."

3. Providers also leverage AI for assistance with complex clinical decisions. Mr. Khoury noted organizations are starting to use AI-enabled decision support that pulls from medical evidence. With the help of AI, physicians are able to develop complex models for specific patients.

4. Mr. Khoury warned providers should not jump headfirst into technology that isn't backed by evidence, though.

5. Fellow panelists included Eric Just, Health Catalyst's senior vice president for product development; Chris Mansi, MD, neurosurgeon and co-founder and CEO of Viz; and Eric Williams, Omada Health's vice president of data science and analytics.

6. All panelists agreed transparency and bringing physicians onboard early in development will prove critical to a technology's success.
