Practice Management

Sentara Leigh Hospital's orthopedic center was designated the Orthopedic Hospital at Sentara Leigh today as the first designated orthopedic hospital in South Hampton Roads, Va.

Here are five things to know:

1. Sentara Healthcare designated the hospital after a nearly eight-year renovation process.

2. The Orthopedic Hospital at Sentara Leigh provides comprehensive orthopedic services, including pre-habilitation, surgery and rehabilitation. The hospital opened the Sentara Hand Specialty Center in January and also includes the Sentara OrthoJoint Center.

3. Orthopedic Hospital at Sentara Leigh incorporates the ExpressTrack option, designed to shorten the hospital stay for appropriate patients.

4. The 48-bed orthopedic center has earned the Blue Distinction for Spine Surgery and Blue Distinction for Knee and Hip Replacement from Blue Cross Blue Shield as well as the Distinguished Hospital Award from Healthgrades.

5. Surgeons at the hospital are board-certified and fellowship trained focusing on joint replacement, hand and extremity care, sports medicine, shoulder surgery, orthopedic trauma and orthopedic research.

"Sentara Leigh Hospital completes the highest combined volume of inpatient knee and hip replacements in Virginia and has received many awards recognizing its quality, safety and service excellence," said Carole Guinane, vice president of Sentara Healthcare orthopedic service line. "This concept of a hospital within a hospital designation reflects the concentration and specialization of orthopedic services at Sentara Leigh Hospital."
