AMA annual report — Membership growth for 6th consecutive year

Practice Management

The American Medical Association noted its sixth consecutive year of membership growth, outlined alongside other achievements in its 2016 Annual Report, according to AMA Wire.

Here are six takeaways from the report:

1. In 2016, the AMA worked with state medical societies to help block the Aetna-Humana and Anthem-Cigna mergers.

2. The society also honed in the opioid epidemic, diabetes and hypertension in 2016, launching efforts to address the needs of patients in these areas.

3. The AMA added new members to its Accelerating Change in Medical Education Consortium, bringing total membership to 32 medical schools. The consortium supports innovations in teaching, such as offering courses on EHR systems.

4. The year also saw the unveiling of AMA's specialty journals, JAMA Cardiology and JAMA Oncology.

5. In 2016, the AMA published a Code of Medical Ethics — the first comprehensive update in a half-century.

6. APCO Worldwide, an international public affairs firm, recognized the AMA as the most effective professional and trade organization in the United States in 2016.
