Dr. William Maloney III steps into AAOS presidency role

William J. Maloney III, MD, took the helm as American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' president during the annual meeting in San Diego on March 17, 2017.

Dr. Maloney steps into his new role after serving for two years as the academy's vice president. He has long been involved with AAOS, including serving on the council on education committee.

 

Specializing in joint replacement, Dr. Maloney serves as Stanford (Calif.) University School of Medicine's Elsbach-Richards Professor in Surgery. He is also the chairman of the school's orthopedic surgery department, where he serves as a professor.

 

His commitment to advancing orthopedic care has seen Dr. Maloney serve as chair of the American Joint Replacement Registry's board of directors as well as on the boards for the Knee Society, Western Orthopaedic Association and American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. He also served on the board and was a former president of the Hip Society.

 

He completed his hip reconstruction surgery fellowship at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

 

"As president, I look forward to prioritizing the needs of our membership and continuing to advance Academy orthopedic education so that our specialty can continue to deliver the highest quality of patient care," said Dr. Maloney. "It is a privilege to serve my colleagues in this capacity."
