Monmouth University in West Long Branch, N.J., conducted a poll to discover which issues are most important to Americans today, and around 25 percent of respondents said healthcare costs are their biggest concern.

Here are five key findings in the study:

1. The percentage of Americans reporting healthcare costs as their biggest concern is up 10 percentage points from 2015.

2. Healthcare costs are now bigger worries for Americans than unemployment or paying everyday household bills. Half of Americans said their personal financial situation is stable and 20 percent said their financial circumstances are improving.

3. Healthcare was a top concern for Americans regardless of income level or political party affiliation.

4. Fifty-nine percent of the self-described middle class reported their situation was stable and 23 percent said it was improving.

5. Forty-two percent of respondents expect Washington to help them with their family's top concern over the next few years. However, there was a divide between Democrats and Republicans, as 74 percent of Republicans felt Washington would help, compared to 15 percent of Democrats.
