University of Maryland School of Medicine to open $300M facility: 7 observations

Practice Management

Baltimore's University of Maryland School of Medicine is spearheading its most ambitious recruitment program by opening a 450,000-square-foot research facility to attract top-notch scientists and researchers.

Here are seven observations:

1. The successful recruitment of the new scientists is the first step of special trans-disciplinary recruitment award program (STRAP), UM SOM's new recruiting initiative.

2. STRAP was launched in 2016 in order to recruit top physicians and scientists whose abilities may accelerate discoveries, cures and therapeutics for serious diseases. Large numbers of highly qualified staff are expected to be hired by 2020.

3. The new scientists are expected to bring $30 million in federal funding through grants and contracts.

4. UM SOM's total research funding surpassed $400 million in 2016.

5. Many of the newly-hired scientists will work in a research facility in Baltimore that cost more than $300 million to build. The facility is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2017 and is expected to attract leading scientists.

6. STRAP signifies UM SOM's aggressive desire to advance into the upper echelon of leading biomedical research institutions in the U.S.

7. The school is especially targeting top researchers and physician scientists who will accelerate breakthroughs in brain disorders, cancer and cardiovascular-metabolic diseases.

8. The University of Maryland School of Medicine was founded in 1807 as the first public medical school in the U.S. and is located on the University of Maryland's Baltimore campus.
