UnitedHealthcare launches value-based knee, hip and spine programs: 4 things to know

Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealthcare is launching a value-based care payment program for knee, hip and spine procedures focused on providing quality patient care called the Spine and Joint Solution.

Here's what you need to know.


1. The new program gives UnitedHealthcare employer-sponsored plan members access to 40 UnitedHealthcare Centers of Excellence across the country that accept bundled case rates for certain joint replacement programs.


2. UnitedHealthcare expects to add 40 more facilities by 2017.


3. The value-based program shifts providers away from the fee-for-service payment structure.


4. UnitedHealthcare introduced the program on a trial basis in 2015. Employers saved more than $10,000 on average per episode of care.
