Physicians find healthcare to be stressful, less lucrative — 8 takeaways

Practice Management

Physicians Practice found physicians are overall dissatisfied with the state of healthcare.

In the survey, Physicians Practice obtained responses from more 1,300 physicians to gauge their thoughts on the medical profession and where the industry is headed.

Here are eight takeaways:

1. In the survey, Physicians Practice asked physicians to rate the following statement: "I am happy with the direction healthcare is headed." The average response was 1.85, based on a scale of one to five (one is strongly disagree and five is strongly agree).

2. The majority of respondents said the medical profession is accompanied by more stress and less financial gains than years past.

3. Thirty-seven percent of physicians said third-party interference was their biggest frustration, while 13.3 percent said their number one frustration was the decreasing ability to independently practice.

4. Approximately 11.6 percent of respondents reported government regulations as the biggest frustration with the healthcare system.

5. More than half (54.2 percent) of respondents wanted to work fewer hours each week and 52.9 percent said they cannot afford to scale back on hours.

6. Concerning the Affordable Care Act, 45.5 percent of physicians said the health law was doing Americans a disservice while 45.5 percent said it has been "mostly good." Only 7.5 percent of physicians reported the ACA has been great.

7. Nearly 54.1 percent reported although good in theory, value-based care was quite difficult to execute successfully.

8. Of survey respondents, 40.2 percent reported voting for the Democratic candidate in the upcoming election and 45.6 percent said they were voting for the Republican candidate. Almost 14 percent said they are abstaining from voting in the upcoming election.
