After ransomware attack, California provider loses data due to backup system failure — 7 insights

Practice Management

Greenbrae, Calif.-based Marin Healthcare District and Prima Medical Foundation reported they lost some patient data following a ransomware attack, according to Security InfoWatch.

Here are seven insights:

1. The healthcare provider is notifying more than 5,000 patients about lost medical data.

2. On July 26, Marin Medical Practice Concepts, which provides medical billing and EMR services to Marin physicians, suffered a malware attack. Many Marin physicians could not access medical records for more than one week.

3. Marin Medical Practice Concepts paid a ransom to regain access to the medical records, but did not disclose the amount.

4. The affected healthcare providers investigated the incident and found no evidence that "patient personal, financial or health information was accessed, viewed or transferred," according to a released statement.

5. The statement reported, however, that a Marin Medical Practice Concepts' backup system failed during the restoration process. This caused some patient data loss from Marin Healthcare District's nine medical centers between July 11 and July 26.

6. The lost information encompasses "vital signs, limited clinical history, documentation of physical examinations and any record of the communication between patients and their physician during a visit in that 15 day period," added the statement.

7. The providers lost no diagnostic data, so patients will not need to undergo re-testing.
