UnitedHealth Group teams up with University of California Health system on ACO & research lab — 5 highlights

UnitedHealth Group and University of California Health system formed a 10-year partnership that will create an accountable care organization and a research lab, according to Kaiser Health News.

Here are five highlights:

 

1. UnitedHealth Group and UC will offer the ACO to large, self-funded employers in California.

 

2. The two parties will also open a research lab in San Francisco dedicated to expanding patient data research. UnitedHealth will create a San Francisco Office designated for OptumLabs, a collaborative research center.

 

3. UnitedHealth Group serves more than 3.5 million California residents and plans to continue expanding its presence in Medi-Cal, California's Medicaid program.

 

4. The UC system operates five medical canters throughout California in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Irvine and Davis. The system plans to work with other payers, such as Blue Cross and Blue Shield of California and Aetna.

 

5. David Kraus, chief contracting and clinical strategy officer for the UC Health system, said, UnitedHealth made an optimal partner due to its data-mining capabilities as well as administrative support. Mr. Kraus told KHN, "What was unique about UnitedHealth is they are more than just a health plan. This collaboration helps us advance things quicker."
