Two independent physician groups in Michigan exploring merger: 4 takeaways

Practice Management

The Physicians' Organization of West Michigan and the West Michigan Physicians Network are exploring a potential merger with Answer Health, MiBiz reports

The two groups could have an agreement in place as soon as this fall.

Here's what you need to know.

1. If the two entities agree to join Answer, it would be sometime in the beginning of 2017.

2. The two organizations created and financially backed Answer Health. If the groups join Answer Health, the company would have "greater depth and strength in numbers in an era when health systems are directly employing more doctors."

3. A shift towards value-based care models is the driving force behind the potential merger. Because medical reimbursement could be tied to quality, cost of care and patient satisfaction, physicians are seeking to join medical groups instead of running independent practices.

4. Answer Health Interim Chief Executive Officer Khan Nedd said the ultimate goal of Answer Health is to partner with health systems like Spectrum Health, Mercy Health and Metro Health throughout Michigan to "have a voice and a role" in the market's healthcare options.
