Dr. Raymond Bertino creates app for physicians to reference in case of an aerial emergency: 4 thoughts

Practice Management

airRX is an app created to help physicians provide aid in the chance a medical emergency occurs while they're 30,000 feet off the ground. Here are four thoughts:

1. Dr. Bertino created the app as a way to help enhance emergency care on commercial airline flights. If the flight crew asks for a physician volunteer, the physician may be stepping into an unknown field and be expected to provide care.

2. The app builds on the inherent knowledge physicians have and reminds them of things they would need to do in an emergency situations. But the app's benefits is not directly tied to physicians. Both passengers and airline companies will benefit from having the app, Dr. Bertino said.

3. Dr. Bertino realized the need for the app, after having a medical emergency in the sky. He was unable to communicate what was wrong with him while on a flight, and the volunteer physician was at a loss over how to evaluate him. That's when the idea was born.

4. The app gives physicians access to 23 scenarios considered to be some of the most common medical emergencies in-flight, and it works while a phone is in airplane mode.
