Is big data offering an alternative to evidence-based medicine? 6 highlights

Practice Management

Big data may present a new way to understand healthcare, moving away from evidence-based medicine, according to Forbes.

Here are six highlights:

1. Clinical trials pose a problem of generalization outside of small test groups.

2. Big data offers the idea of practice-based medicine. By analyzing patient records, researchers can understand treatments' true efficacy for various conditions in the real world.

3. Apixio, a San Mateo, Calif.-based cognitive computing company, plans to equip healthcare providers with practice-based evidence.

4. About 80 percent of clinical information is considered unstructured data, meaning it's in the form of physician notes or pathology results.

5. Apixio pulls the data from electronic health records, and uses optical character recognition technology to analyze the data. This transforms the various forms of data into a textual representation that computers understand.

6. Computers can sort the data for an individual patient model, or create a broader analysis of a population.
