What will the healthcare industry look like in the coming years? 4 key thoughts

Practice Management

As healthcare trends toward value-based payment models, payers will have to create new tools to allow customers to choose the most cost-effective and quality healthcare services, according to HealthPayer Intelligence.

Here are four key thoughts:

1. In the future, consumers will continue to have more responsibility over their healthcare dollars. A Kaiser Family Foundation survey found 46 percent of consumers have high deductible plans of $1,000 or more, up 10 percent from 2006.

2. Payers will create mobile apps, which are an increasingly integral part of healthcare. Health Advocate, the nation's leading health advocacy and healthcare assistance company, devised a mobile app which gives user access to their cost and quality system.

3. Health insurance companies continue to provide incentives to customers such as reduced premiums for signing up for programs such as life coaching. Recent research shows providing consumers with more immediate incentives, such as a gift card, are more likely to incite action.

4. Payers will need to engage customers to utilize price transparency tools. Payers can drive utilization by helping customers better understand the information or providing estimates.
