Taking control: 5 ways to navigate patient reviews

Practice Management

Whether physicians find online reviews valid, more patients are using online surveys. Boston-based Nuance, a health tech company, found more than half of millennials said they used online reviews to find a doctor, according to Physicians Practice.

Aaron Braun, MD, medical director of SignatureCare Emergency Center in Dallas, discusses tips for providers to navigate patient reviews.

Here are five things to know:

1. If providers show they are compassionate, empathetic and provide quality care, patients will most likely give positive online reviews.

2. If you sense patients are agitated, take the time to figure out what may be troubling them.

3. If you receive a bad review, use that feedback to implement better practices.

4. Dr. Braun advises surveying as many patients as possible. Dr. Braun's organization electronically surveys patients on their experience and posts each physician's ratings on their page, which in turn motivates physicians.

5. Hone your interpersonal skills. Dr. Braun said, "If you actually make eye contact, smile, walk people to their room … it's [basic] patient/human-being interaction. If you do those things, you can manage [most] of this."
