Most orthopedic surgeons work in private practice, with the largest segment of those surgeons in private practice orthopedic groups, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Census.

Here are five key notes on the surgeons in full time roles:

 

1. There are around 13 percent of orthopedic surgeons in solo private practice where income is self-earned.

 

2. Only 9.7 percent of orthopedic surgeons are in a private practice multispecialty group; 37.3 are in a private practice orthopedic group.

 

3. There are 13.5 percent of orthopedic surgeons who receive their salary from an academic institution as part of an academic private practice.

 

4. Sixteen percent of orthopedic surgeons earn their salary from a hospital or medical center.

 

5. Only 1.7 percent of orthopedic surgeons currently earn their salary from a pre-paid plan/HMO.
