Patients choosing facility over physician — 4 key points

Practice Management

A new study found patients' relationships with their physicians have declined over the last 15 years and they choose a facility over a physician as their source of healthcare, according to Forbes.

American Family Physician published the report in its Dec. 15 issue.

Here are four key points:

1. Researchers wrote the decline in the number of people reporting a physician as their source of care was matched by an almost equivalent rise in patients reporting a facility as their usual source.

2. Many physicians are concerned patients not seeing a regular physician may have a less coordinated patient care experience.

3. Various types of facilities such as urgent care centers or retailers are expanding, and will continue to rise as the country faces a physician shortage.

4. To combat the physician shortage, retailers such as Walgreens Boots Alliance and CVS claim they are filling the gap by staffing their clinics with nurse practitioners.
