8 reasons to care about physician wellness

Practice Management

Countless medical professionals are dropping out before their residency, some to pursue other options and others are just burnt out. Physician wellness must be a priority, according to Forbes.

Here are eight notes:

1 A reported 81 percent of physicians are overextended or at full capacity.

2. A mere 19 percent of physicians stated they have ample time to see more patients, according to a Physician Foundation Survey.

3. A 2012 study found nine out of 10 physicians across the United States are unwilling to recommend the profession to others.

4. Many drop outs reported spending minimal time with patients during medical school, leading them to pursue a different career.

5. Medical reform is very challenging with the majority of medical training utilizing Greek tradition. Rather than being trained in critical thinking, medical students are instructed to memorize facts and adhere to authority.

6. Reimbursement affects staffing at medical facilities. There is a common ratio of five-to-one of administrative/billing staffs to physicians.

7. Health systems need to routinely measure physician wellness to ensure the wellness of healthcare systems.

8. Many advocate for extending the Triple Aim initiative to a Quadruple Aim, adding the goal of enhancing the work life of healthcare providers.
