Growing danger of security breaches in healthcare — 6 things to know

Practice Management

Despite healthcare firms implementing security measures, the number of cyber attacks are increasingly prevalent in the healthcare field. Data is a sought-after commodity and hackers are determined to breach healthcare systems no matter the security system in place, according to the Data Center Journal.

Here are six things to note:

1. Medical firms have had more cyber attacks than in the past and other threats leading to data exposure.

2. More leaders in the medical field are going to bat for patient data protection today than in past years, according to a 2015 Cybersecurity Survey. Nine out of every 10 respondents , all of whom were security leaders in medical organizations, stated they placed a higher emphasis on security this year.

3. Two-third of respondents fell victim to a breach recently due to hacking attacks and employee negligence.

4. The frequency of cyber attacks from outsiders increased 125 percent between 2014 and 2015.

5.  The medical sector is constantly seeking new technological innovations, especially in the last 10 years. These technologies have unknown security flaws, attributing to the high rate of healthcare providers failing in their defense against cyber attacks.

6. Medical firms must emphasize network monitoring and management to reduce security braches. They should utilize cloud services, collocation and other advanced data center options to provide additional protection against breach.
