High cost is the main reason medical practices have not purchased an electronic health record system, according to Physician Practices' 2014 Technology Survey, sponsored by Kareo.

The survey includes a total of 1,442 respondents.

When asked for the primary reason they have not purchased an EHR, respondents reported:

•    They are too expensive — 26.2 percent
•    We're planning on purchasing one in the next one year — 24.6 percent
•    We couldn't find a product that met our needs and have indefinitely suspended our search — 15.5 percent
•    We don't have full buy-in from all our physicians — 12.7 percent
•    We've heard too many horror stories — 10.7 percent
•    We're owned by a hospital or health system and we're awaiting implementation of our parent's EHR — 8.3 percent
•    We're thinking of affiliating with, or being acquired by, a hospital or health system and would expect to access our new parent's EHR — 2 percent
