Should Non-Physicians Influence Medicare Relative Value Scale Updates?

Practice Management

In an article for Health Affairs Blog, Brian Klepper and Paul Fischer argue that Congress should pass the Accuracy in Medicare Physician Payment Act.

Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA) introduced the Act, which would mean the Relative Value Scale Update Committee would follow the Federal Advisory Committee Act's transparency rules, according to the report. The legislation would also provide non-physician and external expertise to Medicare for the updates.

In the report, the authors argue that such legislation could eliminate waste and overspending in healthcare. Recent reports from news sources such as the Washington Post have highlighted inconsistencies between estimations for procedure time and actual procedure time.
