Patients vs. Paperwork: 12 Statistics on Orthopedic Surgeon Time Spent on Each

Practice Management

The average orthopedic surgeon spends between 20 hours to 30 hours seeing patients each week, according to Medscape's 2012 Orthopedist and Orthopedic Surgeon Compensation Report. However, nearly a quarter of orthopedic surgeons spend less than 30 hours per week seeing patients while around 5 percent spend more than 65 hours seeing patients. By contrast, the average orthopedic surgeon spends between five hours and 14 hours doing administrative work, including paperwork. Here is the breakdown for the minutes spent with each patient and the hours spent in administrative activity. Time spent with each patient:

1. Less than nine minutes: 10 percent
2. Nine to 12 minutes: 32 percent
3. 13 to 16 minutes: 30 percent
4. 17 to 20 minutes: 16 percent
5. 21 to 24 minutes: 4 percent
6. 25 minutes or more: 9 percent

In the 2011 report based on 2010 data, nearly 40 percent of orthopedic surgeons said they spent nine to 12 minutes with each patient. Less than 30 percent said they spent 13 to 16 minutes with patients and more than 10 percent said they spent less than nine minutes with patients. This could mean more surgeons were able to spend a longer time with patients in 2011 than in 2010.

Time spent on administrative activity and paper work:

7. One to four hours: 13 percent
8. Five to nine hours: 29 percent
9. 10 to 14 hours: 30 percent
10. 15 to 19 hours: 12 percent
11. 20 to 24 hours: 6 percent
12. More than 25 hours: 9 percent

In the 2011 report based on 2010 data, nearly 35 percent said they were spending 10 to 14 hours per week in non-patient activities. Another 30 percent said they spent five to nine hours with 15 percent reporting spending less than five hours on non-patient activities. From 2010 to 2011, it seems there was a slight increase in the amount of time orthopedic surgeons spent on administrative activity and paperwork.
