The number of jobs in the ambulatory care setting will likely grow at a faster pace than the number of jobs in the hospital setting over the next 10 years, according to an American Medical News report.
The number of jobs in physician offices will increase 32.7 percent, from 2,315,8000 in 2010 to 3,073,600 in 2020, according to employment projections released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Hospitals will add more jobs, but at a slower pace, according to the report. The number of hospital positions is expected to increase from 5,695,900 in 2010 to 6,638,400 in 2020.
According to the report, job creation in the ambulatory setting will be spurred by the demands of an aging population. As scientific improvements move more procedures to the outpatient setting and healthcare reform begins to reward quality and low cost, more patients will be kept out of the hospital, according to the report.
The BLS report states that job creation in physician offices will be primarily driven by a need for new managers, physician assistants, nurses, medical assistants, financial clerks, administrators and surgeons.
