74% of Surgeons Say Financial Incentives for Patients Could Lead to Healthier Lifestyles

According to the "Deloitte 2013 Survey of U.S. Physicians: Physician perspectives about health care reform and the future of the medical profession" report, 74 percent of surgeons feel that financial incentives for patients — such as direct payments, reduced insurance premiums or reduced co-pays — would motivate them to lead a healthier lifestyle. Around 40 percent of surgical specialists thought rewards and other perks might motivate patients, while only 7 percent thought social networking and games building peer support would do the trick. Nineteen percent reported they doubt any of the suggestions in the survey, which included employers acting as change agents and coaching, would motivate patients for a healthier lifestyle.
