Coding Update 2013: Shoulder Arthroplasty

Billing & Coding
Laura Dyrda -

There are a few updates in coding for shoulder arthroplasty for 2013, according to a report in AAOS Now. Coders can now use CPT 23473 and 23474 for revision total shoulder arthroplasty procedures including the removal of the humeral and/or glenoid component and allograft. According to the report, coders should not use CPT codes 23331 and 23332 with these new codes.

“The new codes were created to address the 5-Year Work Review and reporting of the combination procedure for revision total shoulder arthroplasty,” according to the report. CPT 23473 includes 2013 interim work RVUs at 25.00 and CPT 23474 includes interim work RVUs at 27.21.
