Eric Berkson, MD, is the director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Sports Performance Center and an instructor in orthopedic surgery at Harvard Medical School in Boston. He has a professional interest in treating injuries to the shoulder, elbow and knee. Dr. Berkson also serves as a team physician for the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots.

"With a professional athlete, there's a lot of money involved," said Dr. Berkson in a Good Morning America Health interview. "If I can get a player back on the field a week earlier than anticipated, that might make a multi-million dollar difference to the performance of the team. What makes this job exciting is trying to push the limits and still maintain the athlete's career and future prospects."

In his practice, Dr. Berkson performs advanced arthroscopic procedures of the shoulder, knee and elbow, as well as cartilage repair. He is interested in platelet-rich plasma and reconstructive procedures. His research interests include pitching injuries and studies of shoulder and elbow biomechanics. He has published research in several professional journals, including the Journal of Knee Surgery, Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery and the American Journal of Sports Medicine.

Dr. Berkson has been named an emerging leader by the American Orthopaedic Association and received the Nicols Foundation Young Researcher Award by the International Society of Arthrosocpy. Dr. Berkson also serves as the head team physician for local colleges and high schools.

Dr. Berkson earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago School of Medicine and completed his residency at Rush University Medical Center. He also completed a fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.
