MAKO Surgical Corp., a medical device company producing robotic and minimally invasive orthopedic devices, has reported $12 million in total revenue for the third quarter of 2010, an increase of 79 percent from the third quarter of 2009, according to a company news release.

The company's success can be contributed to an increase in sales of the RIO systems, which sold nine systems domestically and 20 systems worldwide. The company also experienced a 95 percent increase in MAKOplasty procedures over the third period of 2009.

Total gross profit for the third quarter of 2010 was $7.5 million, a 62 percent increase over the third quarter of 2009.

Operating expenses represented $16.5 million during the third quarter of 2010 compared with $12.3 million during the third quarter of 2009. The increase can be attributed to an increase in sales and market activities for the commercialization of the RIO system and RESTORIS implant systems, among other factors.
