Smith & Nephew launches Navio robotic-assisted technology for total knee replacements: 5 things to know

Spinal Tech

Smith & Nephew added total joint replacements to the Navio handheld robotic-assisted technology platform.

Here are five things to know:

1. The Navio Surgical System is the next generation handheld robotics platform for surgeons performing knee repairs. The robotic system is designed to streamline operations and develop more efficient workflow.

2. The robotic system doesn't require preoperative imaging but does provide cut guide capabilities.

3. Navio has been available for unicompartmental knee surgeries since 2014 and now launched the full market release of the total knee replacement application.

4. Surgeons can use the Navio technology with Smith & Nephew's Journey II Legion Primary and Genesis II Total Knee Systems.

5. Total knee replacements comprise around 80 percent of all knee replacement surgeries globally.

"The Navio system offers game changing improvements in precision and accuracy without sacrificing efficiency," said Joseph Burkhardt, DO, an orthopedic surgeon in southwest Michigan. "It allows surgeons the control to create a patient-specific plan in the OR and the confidence to execute with robotic precision."
