University of South Florida develops new engineering department focused on medicine

Tampa-based University of South Florida established a new medical engineering department, according to Tampa Bay Times.

Here are five key notes:

 

1. The partnership is between the College of Engineering and the Morsani College of Medicine.

 

2. Engineering graduate students in the department will work with physicians and medical residents in clinical settings.

 

3. Students will have the opportunity to visit Tampa General Hospital operating rooms with surgeons.

 

4. The school's physicians and engineers will head the department, with specializations in engineering, biomedicine and nanotechnology.

 

5. Industry professionals in drug delivery, orthopedics, cardiology, neurology and cancer will also teach the students.

 

6. At the conclusion of the course, students will write a thesis, with the prospect of publishing and pursuing a patent.
