New study highlights tissue-sparing technique for posterior cervical fusion: 4 insights

Walnut Creek, Calif.-based Providence Medical Technology published, "Novel instrumentation and technique for tissue sparing posterior cervical fusion," in the Journal of Clinical Neuroscience.

Bruce McCormack, MD, and Raman Dhawan, MD, wrote the study.

 

Here are four insights:

 

1. Drs. McCormack and Dhawan illustrate a tissue-sparing technique for posterior cervical fusion with a single-use instrument set, inclusive of an access chisel, a decorticating trephine, a mallet, a guide tube, a decortication burr and a bone graft tamp.

 

2. The technique and instrument set is designed to limit soft tissue disruption as well as promote arthrodesis of the cervical spine.

 

3. In previous papers, researchers have noted posterior cervical fusion associated with perioperative morbidity. However, due to the minimized soft tissue disruption, the Drs. McCormack and Dhawan noted the chance of perioperative morbidity decreased.
