Minnesota's Medical Alley featuring device manufacturers like Medtronic and Boston Scientific are attempting to save their "go-to-guy" Minnesota Representative Erik Paulsen (R), STAT reports.
Here's what you need to know.
1. Mr. Paulsen has helped medical device manufacturers several times through his four terms. He notably delayed the ACA's tax on devices for two years, and has pursued several reforms.
2. Through political action committees, Mr. Paulsen has received almost $400,000. That amount is expected to rise once new disclosures are released.
3. Medtronic, Boston Scientific, Eli Lilly and Pfizer all made donations to Mr. Paulsen. Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America and the Advanced Medical Technology Association have also donated to his campaign.
4. As of July, Mr. Paulsen has raised a total of $3.1 million. His opponent, Minnesota Senator Terri Bonoff (D) has raised $700,000. She has few donations from healthcare companies or trade organizations.
5. Ms. Bonoff said in interviews that she recognizes she'd have to win the device maker's support.
