Cambridge, Mass.-based InVivo Therapeutics added Chicago-based Northwestern Medicine as a clinical site for its INSPIRE study.

Here are five insights:

1. Surgeons will execute the study at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, which is an 894-bed Level 1 trauma center.

2. Nader Dahdaleh, MD, a neurological surgery assistant professor at Northwestern, will serve as the site's principal investigator.

3. With the addition of Northwestern Medicine, the INSPIRE study now has clinical sites in the top six most populated U.S. cities.

4. The INSPIRE study involves 23 clinical sites around the country.

5. The INSPIRE study tests the Neuro-Spinal Scaffold's efficacy and safety for complete thoracic AIS A spinal cord injury.

"Chicago, as with other major metropolitan areas, sees a disproportionally high number of acute, traumatic spinal cord injuries and unfortunately, with complete spinal cord injuries, trauma teams have limited tools at their disposal to treat this devastating condition," said Dr. Dahdaleh.
