Spinal Elements' interspinous process device receives FDA clearance: 5 observations

Spinal Tech

The FDA cleared Carlsbad, Calif.-based Spinal Elements' interspinous process device.

Here are five observations:

1. Interspinous process devices are used in spinal fusions, posited between the spinous process of the spine to offer support and fixation.

2. Spinal Elements' device allows surgeons to intraoperatively select the approach that best fits the situation.

3. Surgeons may implant the device with a minimally invasive or traditional technique.

4. The device is also suitable in superspinous ligament sparing or sacrificing approaches.

5. Spinal Elements plans to commence clinical procedures for the device in late 2016 and conduct an initial device launch in early 2017.
