Miami-based Orthopedic Care Center surgeons are now implanting the ACTIV-L artificial lumbar disc for patients with chronic back pain, according to KSAT 12.

Here are four takeaways:

1. Spine surgeon Rolando Garcia, MD, of Orthopedic Care Center, developed the artificial disc.

2. The ACTIV-L artificial lumbar disc is composed of chromium endplates as well as polyethylene.

3. Dr. Garcia said surgeons implant the disc from an anterior position to spare muscles.

4. Patients with low back pain who have not found relief from non-surgical treatment and who don't have osteoporosis may benefit from the ACTIV-L artificial lumbar disc.
