5 key notes on the Zimmer Biomet-LDR acquisition & its impact on Texas

The news about Zimmer Biomet acquiring LDR could raise some concerns Austin, Texas.-based LDR employees because the former has previously shut down Austin offices of companies it has bought, according to an Austin American-Statesman report.

Here are five key notes:

 

1. In 2013, the then Zimmer shut down Abbott Spine's Austin office, a company it purchased in 2008.

 

2. In 2004, Zimmer shut down the Austin operations of Centerpulse, a hip, knee and spine replacement device manufacturing facility.

 

3. The Abbott Spine closure affected around 100 people, while 550 people lost their jobs due to the Centerpulse closure.

 

4. A Zimmer Biomet spokesman, however, stated the company plans on maintaining a significant presence in Austin.

 

5. According to a letter from Adam Johnson, group president for Zimmer Biomet's spine division, the companies are "highly complementary."
