Spinal Tech

A growing geriatric population with joint-related disorders will create opportunity for the East Africa knee and hip replacement market, according to a Reportlinker report.

Here are five takeaways from the report:

1. East Africa's population is growing, along with the populations' household disposable income.

2. Most orthopedic surgeons performing joint replacement surgeries serve in urban cities, like Nairobi, Dar es Salaam and Addis Ababa.

3. Some residents pursue medical tourism, however, as local orthopedic surgeons sometimes lack strong skills and infrastructure is poor.

4. Kenya has the Kenyan Orthopaedic Association and Ethiopia has the Ethiopian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology.

5. Kenya and Ethiopia both have looser regulations than Tanzania in terms of medical implant licensing.
